I've always had an interest in radio. I can definitely see myself hosting my own show, offering relevant commentary on events and activities. But I know getting to that point isn't easy. But after my internship this summer at a news station where I learned some valuable information about broadcast, I wanted to give it a try. So I seeked an opportunity with my university radio station, 90.5, The Flava Station. I originally wanted to help with promotions, but I was informed that there isn't a set schedule of activities for the semester. I was a little confused as to why there would not be but decided not to pry. With a little more questioning toward something that would provide more structure I came upon the opportunity to contribute to the underwriting initiatives that are being developed. 90.5 is currently working to increase the amount of companies and organizations that underwrite or publicize with them.I have agreed to research companies and organizations who wish to pub their events and activities with 90.5 through the different shows and underwriting packages available. Thus far I have developed a list of local companies that match the genre of shows the radio stations has; such as varois churches in the area who may be interested in the the gospel segments of The Flava Station and other companies whose target audience is college students. I do like that that this experience is similar to sales which is a huge part of the radio industry. However I feel disconnected to the everyday happenings of the radio station.I had hoped that I would have more hands-on involvement in the culture and responsibilities. I was also looking for an internship that I could physically report to on a weekly basis.
But, I feel that with asking a few more questions I will get the involvement that I want. I know that I can bring my understanding of news to this internship. I have strong written and verbal communication skills which can be used to develop stories for radio news outside of my underwriting tasks. My knowledge of ratings, PSAs and promotions will help me when interacting with underwriting customers. My creativity can also be applied in how I present and attract potential clients. These advantages will allow me to tailor my messeges that will attract the business of our publics and be relative of the station's voice.
One of the long-term goals I would like to achieve through this internship is to contribute to all parts of radio in some way. I hope to gain clients for some of the station's underwriting packages, as well as contribute in promotional efforts for concerts and appearences, appear as a guest commentator on one of the station's variety shows, as well as shadow 90.5's Operations Manager. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I'm confident I will get it done.
*Wish me luck!*
