This summer I interned at FOX 35, in the Creative department, specifically Community Affairs. I seeked this internship opportunity because it was with a credible company and I wanted to experience day-to-day PR management and community involvement. It is also in my hometown of Orlando, which would cut-down on expenditures. Plus, I wanted to have a different experience to add to my resume. Anyone who knows me, would know that I love lifestyle PR, event planning, entertainment and fashion. These are my passions! But, I also want to be a well-rounded PR professional so that's why I chose this particular experience. I enjoyed my experience overall, but mostly appreciate the mentors I gained. While working for a news company as a PR practitioner it gave me keen insight on the importance of the approach and style that news companies like. I now have knowledge of the type of PSAs, press releases, news stories and events these type of companies find worthy of coverage. That is incredible knowledge to have.
Now, that I have gotten my taste of the real-world this summer, it has really helped me transition back into my school schedule. How? Well, while working at FOX 35 I had to wake up at 8am each morning to go to work. That's something that I have never experienced before. Now that I'm back in school I have to be up even before that time for my PR Campaigns course at 8am! It's no secret that I won't be able to sleep in until 10am on a real job so, the internship experience was truely practice for what I will be doing shortly. I also had to wear professional dress to work. This too is something that is now incorporated into my senior level courses. Classes such as PR Research and Strategies as well as PR Campaigns require professional dress. So, this summer I was also in training on what is appropriate attire for the workplace. I appreciate having the experience of the workplace culture, because the early alarm clock and no denim mandates are things I have adjusted to earlier before returning to school. But, this semester is bitter sweet. I will be graduating in the Spring of 2011. This is the time where fellow classmates and me, who have embarked on this PR journey together will officially go our seperate ways. Finally realizing what it is we want to do beyond this point; frightning but exciting! However I do feel my program has provided me with the skills I need to suceed. The importance of planned research, effective communication, the ability to put together well-planned, well-organized PR campaigns and strategies and the importance of valuable internship experience will set me apart from other students around the world. My goals this semester are to finish strong, be organized and timely. This will allow me to have success inside and outside of the classroom.
Lastly, this semester I have decided not to stretch myself so thin with outside activities or projects. However, I do know that these experiences too mold my skill as a pr practitioner. So I have decided to keep a few activities on my resume. Through my Practicum course, a senior level, exit course which prepares students to enter the job pool, with such requirements like professional development through professional dress, workshops, lectures and social media, I have to have a PR internship. So I decided to go radio. Actually being on tv or radio is something that I have always wanted to do. But for now I have decided to work with underwriting/sales for our campus radio station. It is something I would have not normally been interested in, but is a powerful and lucrative task in the broadcast field. I think I will be good at it. Also, I am active with my sorority on campus. My PR skills are present with planning and hosting events as well as my responsibility as one of the social media contributors. I will begin maintaing a blog for our chapter to discuss our programming, opinions and activities on campus and community issues as well as assisting members with our newsletter. I'm excited! Both activites I know I will enjoy, but more importantly add to my PR experience.
